The disciple whom Jesus loved....?

Was this man really John, and why did Jesus favor him above the other disciples? Opinions from christians and non-christians welcome, but serious answers only please(I will even consider more "challenging"explanations,but please make sure you back it up with tangible arguments).Thank you.
