In "Shooting an Elephant" By George Orwell, why was the elephants death detailed and lengthy?

Because we are meant to feel the moral angony which the British shooter felt at his actions. The death of the elephant was a slow, painful process for the man, and through the careful detail, the reader is able to better understand the pain of the man (and, of course, the elephant).
